Here are some common queries many of our customers in Westchester County and in New York City have had before embarking on an exfoliation regime. If you have others, feel free to call our offices and we’ll be happy to address them for you.
What can professional exfoliation treatments do for me?
Our most popular exfoliation treatments at Youtherapy are microdermabrasion and dermaplaning. Both work to soften and remove layers of dead skin while improving your cellular turnover rate, which helps to restore the skin to a more youthful appearance. Many skin conditions can be improved using exfoliants. Fine lines will be softened, dull skin will appear more radiant, rough or uneven skin will become smoother, sun damaged skin or blotchy skin will even out. Acne scarring may also be softened.
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is an effective, non-surgical way to exfoliate the skin with minimal downtime. It also aids in reducing the appearance of acne scars, fine wrinkles and sunspots by removing the top, uppermost layers of dead skin. No chemicals or laser beams are used, only aluminum oxide micro crystals that gently sandblasts your skin, leaving it smooth and fresh. Microdermabrasion also stimulates collagen production, helping your skin regenerate faster than normal.
Is aluminum oxide safe?
Aluminum oxide crystals are perfectly safe and non-toxic if ingested. Youtherapy also offers a crystal-free, Diamond tip microdermabrasion for patients who prefer not to have crystal microdermabrasion.
What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a treatment that uses a surgical blade to gently exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin cells and remove fine facial hair commonly known as “peach fuzz”. It can be used as an alternative to laser treatments and microdermabrasion or along with them for an enhanced result. This procedure will give your skin a more radiant appearance. Following the treatment, makeup application is smoother and other skincare products are able to penetrate deeper in turn making them more effective.
How are the microdermabrasion and dermaplaning similar?
Both of these treatments address exfoliating dull skin to reveal brighter, new skin and both provide immediate results, leaving your skin with a noticeable glow.
How are the two treatments different?
The major difference is in the devices used. Dermaplaning includes using an exfoliating blade on a metal handle – this removes dead skin manually and also has the added benefit of getting rid of peach fuzz. Microdermabrasion is done with a small electric device that pushes exfoliating factors onto the skin while it vacuums debris at the same time. This exposes a new layer of skin and cleans the pores.
Are the procedures safe?
Microdermabrasion and dermaplaning are completely safe when performed by an professionally trained esthetician, such as those at Youtherapy. There is no more risk to the skin than when you shave your legs. There is also no downtime associated with these procedures.
How much time do the procedures require?
Both microdermabrasion and dermaplaning treatments take anywhere from 30-60 minutes.
How often can I have exfoliation treatments done?
Our estheticians will help determine the best treatment plan for your skin’s concerns. Optimally, a microdermabrasion or dermaplaning treatment is recommended once every four weeks.
Do exfoliation treatments hurt?
Both microdermabrasion and dermaplaning are comfortable for clients. Since they are exfoliating treatments, some have reported some mild skin irritations that quickly resolve within the first day or two post treatment.
How much does microdermabrasion and dermaplaning cost?
Treatments begin at $125 and can go up from there, depending on the service. Discounted packages are available for optimal results and convenience.
