Chemical Peels Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve got questions? Youtherapy has the answers!

Here are some common queries many of our customers in Manhattan and Westchester County have had before embarking on a chemical peel procedure. If you have others, feel free to call our offices and we’ll be happy to address them for you.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel uses exfoliating solutions such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to remove damaged or aged layers of skin to reveal the softer, more youthful skin underneath.

Are there different types of chemical peels?

Chemical peel facial treatments usually fall into three general categories: light, medium, and deep peels. Light and medium peels will exfoliate your skin surface and clear all your clogged pores, with some light flaking or peeling. These peels can gently address chronic dry skin, fine lines, uneven pigmentation, mild acne, and acne scars. But if you want to minimize the effect of deeper facial wrinkles or improve the blotchiness caused by sun damage or aging, you may be a suitable candidate for a deep chemical peel treatment, which is more invasive than the other two types and requires more post-treatment recovery.

How is a chemical peel performed?

Most chemical peel procedures begin with prepping the skin in order for the peel to be applied. Youtherapy’s licensed professionals will clean your skin and use a mild toner to remove any oils before gently applying layers of a solution to the surface of the skin. Depending on the peel, the solution is left on your face for a certain period of time before the product is removed. After removing the peel solution, a moisturizer or serum tailored to your skin type may be applied.

What is the recovery time for a chemical peel?

Depending on the peel, recovery time can be anywhere from 3-7 days. Light flaking and peeling can be expected from lighter peels, whereas stronger peels will have physical peeling that can last anywhere from 3-7 days. With all facial services, cleansing, moisturizing, and using sunscreen SPF 30 or higher are highly recommended post-treatment in order to achieve maximum results. Avoid sun exposure during the early healing period and is recommended in general. Do not peel off loose skin as this can cause the skin to scar or have hyperpigmentation – allow the skin to exfoliate on its own.

What results should I expect?

The results of a chemical peel vary depending on the peel that you receive. A superficial peel exfoliates while slightly reducing the signs of aging and skin damage. Stronger peels are more effective in reducing signs of sun damage and fine wrinkles helping with the appearance of aging skin. Options are always discussed with our experienced estheticians, who will provide their expert opinion on the best suited peel for your needs.

How many peels will I need?

Depending on your skin’s concerns and needs, the amount recommended varies. We recommend a series of 4-6 peels in order to achieve the best results, but can be further discussed with one of our Skincare Specialists.

How long do the results last?

With good sun protection, results can last months to years, depending on the depth of the peel and condition of the skin. When done in a consistent series, we can achieve greater results!

What are the risks of chemical peels?

Superficial peels are quite safe although rarely minor irritation of the skin can occur.

How much do chemical peels cost at Youtherapy?

Our chemical peels range in price but they start around $125. When done in a series, there is a discount applied. For more information, book a free consultation with our skincare experts today.
